hi,

I wanted to know, when I save my songs on the MO, it also saves a bunch of preset user sounds (I believe). Is this normal, and can it be changed? I pretty much only want to save/load the songs, and most of the time spent loading is loading these preset user voices.

I don’t have a manual with this keyboard unfortunately, which is hampering my use of it slightly.

Anybody with some info is appreciated, thanks

J

All Yamaha Owner’s Manuals are available for free download - so no excuses.:-)

It will explain to you that a PRESET is a VOICE that cannot be lost, or destroyed (and therefore never needs to be loaded or backed up). PRESET VOICES can be edited but the edit, if you want to keep it, must be stored to what are called USER VOICE locations.

USER VOICES are like PRESETS that can be changed. Because you STORE your edits to the USER VOICE locations, they are the ones that can be lost and destroyed if you edit them without backing them up - therefore it is customary to backup your USER data to a USB stick.

PRESET VOICES are in READ ONLY MEMORY (ROM)
USER VOICES are in RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM) user re-writeable memory

When you SAVE a FILE, the data that gets saved in that file will be determined by the TYPE parameter setting you select when you go to FILE mode.

If you select “ALL” for example, this will Save all USER data that has been stored to the MO’s internal Flash ROM. All USER Voices, all Performances, all Songs, all Patterns, all user arpeggios, all Master programs, all Utility mode settings.  (It does not save any PRESET data as that data cannot be lost or destroyed so there is no reason to save it). Only data that can be overwritten is saved.

Hope that helps…

Ok, so in theory I could erase all the USER voices and it would speed up load/save times?

I just want to be running lean…

Also about manuals, I prefer paper copies and don’t really have the money to spend on printing out the MO manual just yet.

thanks !

No. If you want to be lean, change your daily diet. :-). You do not get to choose what gets SAVED beyond selecting the FILE SAVE TYPE. I’ll state this as plain as I can: You cannot “erase all the USER voices”. A Voice that makes no sound uses as much memory as one that does. A volume setting of 0 uses as much memory to save as one that is set at 127.  :-)

If you have one of those empty school composition books on the shelf, just because the pages are blank, they still count toward the overall thickness of the book. A blank page is still a page.

You should get the manual and at least learn some of these very important basic things. No excuses.
:-)
I’ve already described what an ALL file contains = all user configurable data is saved. All means all the user data, period.

Your other options include:
ALL VOICE - just the User Bank Voices (256 User normal, and 32 User drum Voices)
ALL SONG - just the 64 Songs and their Mixing settings
ALL PATTERN - just the 64 Patterns and their Mixing settings
USER ARP - just the 256 user arps
SMF (Standard MIDI File) .MID Individual Song or Pattern Section (no Mixing settings)
VOICE EDITOR - all user Voice data saved in format for the computer Editor.

So if you want to save less data, save just the file TYPE that you require.

WARNING: make sure the data you require is Saved by the Type you select. ALL data files are foolproof because they save everything. YOU have to be smart to use the other Types in that you need to be sure that the type you’re saving includes what you expect to be there.

Ok great, you answered my questions!

thank you!

So I will from now on just save ‘all songs’ because that’s the main thing I want to do. :D

I haven’t delved into making performances, user voices, or anything other than sequenced songs. My main amazement with the mo6 is just the quality of the voices and happy to use them as is for composition.

Thanks, sorry I didn’t look through the manual. Now I know I can save ‘all songs’
